Equipping Minds, Nurturing Hearts, to Transform the World for Jesus Christ

Many Seconds in Second

  • We're beginning our nextscience unit, Earth's Land and Water, this week.  Your child will be taking his/her plants home this week.
  • Our word work (VoWac) activities are providing practice with ways to spell the long vowel sounds.  There will be a spelling test on these words on Friday.  A paper copy of these words went home on Friday or they are on the side bar on the blog.
  • The second graders are becoming excellent thinkers with all the story problems they've been solving in our math work. These types of word problems, along with the visual representations the students draw on their math papers, help them apply the basic equations of addition and subtraction to similar real-world situations.
  • Reading and Writing Workshop are favorite times of the day for many of the second graders. We're learning to stop and respond to what we read on stickie notes and in our reading notebooks. This work is then shared during conferring time with me and with your child's reading buddy. In writing, most students have 3-5 stories they've finished or are revising. We'll be choosing one story to "publish" during this next month.
  • We spent the first month of our Bible stories on a brief overview of the Old Testament. We've talked about how God chose one man (Abraham) and his family to become a nation (Israel) that would be His chosen people. We've seen God's incredible grace as His people turned away again and again, yet God continued to forgive them when they repented. For the next two weeks we'll be looking at the time between the old and new testaments (400 years) and see how the world conditions led to God's perfect timing for Jesus' birth.
Looking Ahead
  • Report Cards will be sent home (paper copy) on Friday, Oct. 17.
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences - Tues. evening (Oct. 21) and Wed. afternoon and evening (Oct. 22).
  • No school for students on Oct. 22-24.
